Upper House Discoed Presteigne Accommodation

Upper House – Tudor Manor house near Presteigne

The stunning Upper House offers extremely comfortable accommodation for up to six people. With flag-stoned or oak floors, each room in the house is highly individual and furnished with a mixture of antiques and examples of John Nethercott’s furniture – restored or made in one of the barns that house his workshops across the courtyard. Hot water and central heating are provided by the oil-fired Rayburn.  No smoking in the house, please.

  • DINING HALL WITH OAK REFECTORY TABLE
  • LIVING ROOM WITH INGLENOOK FIREPLACE
  • SNUG WITH WOOD BURNER, T.V. AND LIBRARY
  • FARMHOUSE KITCHEN
  • BOOT ROOM / UTILITY ROOM
  • THREE DOUBLE  BEDROOMS PLUS DRESSING / SINGLE BEDROOM
  • TWO BATHROOMS
  • DOWNSTAIRS CLOAKROOM

LIVING: At the heart of the house is the huge inglenook fireplace with its open fire (all logs provided). With the lamps dimmed, the candles lit and a good bottle of wine warming on the antique ‘steel footman’, this room provides the perfect setting for a romantic evening or intimate gathering of old friends or family. In addition, this room has electric under-floor heating beneath its flagstones. The ‘snug’ next door has a wood-burning stove, a library of books to suit all interests and the flat screen TV with its CD/DVD player – and speakers that can alternatively be connected to your smart phone or mp3 player. There is good WiFi access, but patchy reception for mobile phones.  For the musically inclined there is a good electronic keyboard (Clavinova).

EATING:  The large (unfitted) kitchen is traditionally furnished with a gateleg table and a Welsh dresser. There is a second pine table so that children can sit separately if required, a Rayburn, dual-fuel stove, fridge and dishwasher. A period feature is the unusual antique earthenware sink with traditional brass taps. There is a traditional oak plate rack and Welsh slate draining board. The makings of a simple first night supper and “full English” first breakfast are provided. It is stocked with essentials such as olive oil, butter, eggs, milk, tea, coffee etc. The porch beyond accommodates a cold larder cupboard, freezer and automatic washing machine. There is a second earthenware sink here and accommodation for boots, coats – and the dog. The entrance hall has an oak refectory table with oak settle and hide-covered ‘back stools’ to seat 10 people for a special candle-lit dinner.

SLEEPING AND WASHING:  There are three main bedrooms – two furnished with king-sized Nethercott beds, the third with twin beds that can be joined together to form a super king-size on request. In addition there is a small single bedroom – only really suitable for a child that needs to be within earshot of his or her parents.

The main bedroom has an antique oak floor (with an interesting slope that makes it unsuitable for the infirm) and a walk-in wardrobe – or accommodation for a baby’s cot.

The garden bedroom overlooks the lawn and herb garden. In season, pears can be picked from the espaliered tree that surrounds its window.

The twin-bedded room has a small desk and an ensuite oak-beamed bathroom which can be also be accessed through the single bedroom. The second bathroom, panelled in cherrywood, has a (power) shower as well as a bath.

Duvets and pillows are provided together with 100% Egyptian cotton bedding, towels and a small selection of toiletries.

OUTSIDE: There is a large flag-stoned area with table, chairs and a raised fish and lily pond – ideal for summer meals. A barbeque is provided and a large stone-tiled lean-to provides shelter for firewood and smokers. There is plenty of parking space in the courtyard and cars can be driven up the side of the house to facilitate unpacking.
